Fix your TV

My TV keeps freezing: causes and fixes

A TV that stops responding for a few seconds, or locks up until you pull the plug, is almost always short of memory, storage or cooling. Work through the steps in order; most take a minute.

Why it happens

  • Not enough free memory

Many smart TVs ship with only 1 to 2 GB of RAM. The system, the home screen and every app you opened share it, so the TV starts shuffling things around and stalls.

  • Storage that is nearly full

Android needs free space to work. When storage is almost full, apps and updates slow down and may hang.

  • A heavy home screen

Some manufacturers’ home screens load rows of recommendations, thumbnails and promotions the moment you press Home, which is a lot for a weak processor.

  • Heat

A TV in a closed cabinet, or a box tucked behind it with no airflow, slows itself down to cool off and can freeze.

  • Old or half-installed software

Outdated firmware, an interrupted update or an app that keeps crashing can leave the system unstable.

What to try, in order

  1. Unplug the TV for a minute

Switch it off at the wall, wait 60 seconds and plug it back in. This clears the memory completely and fixes most one-off freezes.

  2. Check the free storage

Open the TV’s Settings and look for Storage (usually under Device Preferences). Try to keep at least 10 to 15% free by uninstalling apps you don’t use.

  3. Remove or update apps

In Settings › Apps, uninstall what you rarely open and update the rest in the Play Store. Fewer apps means more free memory.

  4. Update the TV’s software

Look for System update under Settings › Device Preferences › About. The exact path depends on the brand.

  5. Give it some air

Keep the vents clear and don’t close a box into a cabinet. If the TV is hot to the touch, let it cool and see whether the freezing stops.

  6. Try a lighter home screen

If the freezing happens mostly on the home screen or when you press Home, replace it with a lighter launcher such as HView.

  7. Factory reset, as a last resort

Back up what you need first. A reset returns the TV to how it was when new; do it only if nothing above helped.

Where HView helps

HView replaces your home screen with one built for boxes with 1 GB of memory. Anything you switch off is never loaded, and the Minimal theme uses no images at all, so pressing Home asks much less of the TV.

From its app menu you can also open an app’s info or uninstall it without digging through Settings.

Where it doesn’t

HView can’t add memory, cool a TV or repair hardware. If the TV freezes inside one particular app, or in every app, the cause is elsewhere: follow the steps above.

Questions

Why does my TV freeze only when I press Home?

That points at the home screen. Many default home screens load a lot of content at once. Trying a lighter launcher is the quickest way to test it, and HView is free for 7 days.

Will a factory reset stop the freezing?

Often, for a while. It clears everything that built up, but the same apps and the same hardware will slow it down again. Try the other steps first.

Will HView stop freezing inside YouTube or Netflix?

No. HView is the home screen, not the apps. It can stop the home screen from being part of the problem, but it can’t change how another app behaves.
